When God Seems Silent

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 74:1–23

What do you do when you pray and nothing seems to change?

Psalm 74 doesn't give us a sanitized answer.

This communal lament is attributed to Asaph and describes devastation among God's people. The sanctuary has been destroyed, enemies appear victorious, and the people cannot see the signs of God's intervention.

Their question is painful:

How long?

Yet in the middle of lament, something happens.

The psalmist remembers.

He declares that God has been King from ancient times. He remembers God's mighty works and His authority over creation.

The devastation is still there.

The questions haven't disappeared.

But remembrance gives grief somewhere to stand.

This is one of the difficult lessons of dependence: God's apparent silence does not erase God's established character.

There will be seasons when you don't understand what He's doing.

There may even be seasons when you wonder whether He's doing anything at all.

The Shepherd has not stopped being Shepherd simply because you cannot presently see His hand.

Micro Surrender

Today, surrender the demand that God must explain Himself before you will trust Him.

Tell Him where you're confused. Ask your questions. Lament what has been lost.

Then remember who He has revealed Himself to be.

Pray:

“Lord, I don't understand this moment, but I will not rewrite Your character because I don't understand Your silence.”

Prayer

Father, meet me in the places where I have questions. When I cannot see what You are doing, keep me anchored in who You are. Help me remember Your faithfulness and trust You without demanding that I understand everything first. In Jesus' name, amen.

Reflect

Have I allowed God's silence in one situation to change what I believe about His character?
