When God's Plan Doesn't Look Like Progress

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture: Psalm 105:16–36

Sometimes the path toward God's promise looks nothing like what we expected.

Psalm 105 recounts how God worked through famine, Joseph's suffering, and Israel's eventual deliverance from Egypt.

Joseph was sold into slavery and later imprisoned. From a human perspective, his circumstances appeared to contradict the dreams he had received.

Yet Psalm 105:19 reminds us that Joseph was tested until the time his word came to pass.

The psalmist looks backward and recognizes God's providence in circumstances that would have been difficult to understand while they were unfolding.

This does not mean every hardship is a direct assignment from God or that suffering should be celebrated. It reminds us that human opposition and painful circumstances cannot ultimately overthrow God's sovereign purposes.

God's authority is not limited by our ability to understand His timing.

Jehovah Sabaoth is not waiting for circumstances to become favorable before He can accomplish His will.

Today, perhaps your invitation is to stop measuring God's faithfulness solely by visible progress.

Reflection Question

Have I mistaken a difficult season for evidence that God has abandoned His purposes?

Prayer

Sovereign LORD, help me trust Your wisdom when I cannot understand my circumstances. Keep me faithful in the responsibilities before me, and teach me patience as I wait upon You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
