When the Darkness Hasn't Lifted

Scripture Reading: Psalm 88:1–18
Key Verse: “O LORD, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you.” — Psalm 88:1 (ESV)
Don't Let the Darkness Silence Your Prayers
Have you ever entered a new season still carrying the burdens of the last one?
Psalm 88 is one of Scripture's most sobering laments. Heman the Ezrahite cries out from a place of deep suffering, loneliness, and despair. Unlike many other Psalms, this one doesn't conclude with an obvious declaration of victory.
The darkness hasn't lifted.
Yet notice how the Psalm begins. Before describing his suffering, Heman addresses the Lord as the God of his salvation.
Even in anguish, he knows where to direct his cry.
As we prepare to enter another week, this Psalm reminds us that we don't have to pretend everything is resolved before continuing our walk with God.
But we must also be careful not to allow our pain to become the only voice we hear.
Darkness may describe our present circumstances, but it does not define the Everlasting God.
El Olam remains worthy of our prayers, even when answers seem delayed. And when our strength is depleted, we can seek His help and the support of those who will faithfully walk beside us.
We may enter a new week with unanswered questions, but we can enter it still turning toward Him.
Today's Refrain
The darkness may not have lifted, but I will keep bringing my heart before the Everlasting God.
A Prayer for Today
Everlasting Father, You know the burdens I carry and the places where I struggle to see hope. Thank You that I can bring my sorrow before You without pretending to be strong. As I enter a new week, help me remain open to Your presence, Your truth, and the support You provide. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Today's Challenge: Carry the Prayer, Not Just the Pain
Before beginning a new week, identify one burden you've been carrying silently.
Bring it honestly before God, and consider sharing it with someone trustworthy who can pray with you.
Ask yourself:
What would it look like to enter this new week acknowledging my pain without allowing it to determine every step I take?
