When the Heart Learns the Wrong Thing

Anchor: Psalm 53:2–3

“God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.”

Psalm 53 isn't primarily about personal trauma. It is a sobering description of humanity turned away from God.

“The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”

Notice where the problem begins.

In the heart.

Biblically, the heart encompasses far more than emotion. It is the inner place from which our desires, decisions, thoughts, and allegiances flow.

That makes today's Psalm useful in our healing journey because painful experiences can sometimes leave behind conclusions.

People aren't safe.

I have to protect myself.

If I don't control it, something bad will happen.

My needs don't matter.

I can't trust anyone.

Not every protective instinct is sinful, and healthy boundaries can be wise. But sometimes something we learned to do in order to survive one season quietly becomes the rule by which we live another.

That's where the Shepherd's truth becomes necessary.

God isn't condemning us for having been wounded.

He is lovingly challenging anything the wound taught us that contradicts Him.

Perhaps you don't need another memory today.

Perhaps you need God to reveal the meaning you attached to the memory you already have.

Today's Micro Surrender

Complete this sentence honestly:

“Because of what happened, I learned to believe __________.”

Then ask:

“Lord, is this still true?”

Allow Scripture—not fear, history, or another person's behavior—to answer.

Prayer

Father, reveal any belief formed through pain that no longer agrees with Your truth. Teach my heart to seek You and trust what You say. Amen.
