Psalm 50:1–23

When the Shepherd Speaks

Psalm 50 begins with God speaking.

“The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth...”

Then He summons His covenant people.

They worship.

They sacrifice.

They know religious practices.

Yet God has something to say about what their worship has become.

This is an important place to end our first week with Jehovah Rohi because following the Shepherd requires more than believing He leads.

We must remain willing to hear when He speaks.

God Wasn't Hungry

God addresses their sacrifices with surprising words.

He isn't condemning the sacrificial system He established.

Instead, He confronts their misunderstanding of it.

God reminds them that every animal already belongs to Him.

“If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.”

In other words:

God doesn't need their performance.

Their sacrifices were never supposed to become transactions through which they managed God.

He wanted worship rooted in covenant relationship.

“Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble.”

Give thanks.

Keep your word.

Call on Me.

That's relationship.

Religious Activity Can Continue Without Surrender

Then God addresses those who recite His laws while disregarding His instruction.

This should make us pause.

They can speak God's words while resisting God's leadership.

And we can too.

We can read Scripture.

Teach Scripture.

Post Scripture.

Quote Scripture.

Listen to sermons.

Attend worship.

And still resist God when His Word confronts something we don't want to surrender.

Knowing what the Shepherd said isn't the same as following what the Shepherd said.

When God Corrects Your Direction

Psalm 50 contains both invitation and correction.

And this first week of September has already taught us something important:

Jehovah Rohi's voice will not always tell us something comfortable.

Sometimes He comforts.

Sometimes He confirms.

Sometimes He says wait.

Sometimes He says go.

And sometimes He says:

This must change.

Correction is not evidence that the Shepherd has abandoned you.

Correction can be evidence that He refuses to leave you traveling in the wrong direction.

“Consider This”

Near the end God says:

“Consider this...”

That's an invitation to stop and examine.

Before beginning another week, perhaps we need exactly that.

Not another request.

Not another plan.

Not another list of things we want God to do.

Just:

“Lord, what have You been saying to me that I haven't fully responded to?”

Then listen.

Today's Micro-Surrender

Set aside a few quiet minutes today without asking God for anything.

Instead ask:

“Lord, is there anything You have already told me that I have delayed obeying?”

Don't manufacture an answer.

Don't become anxious searching for hidden sin.

Simply make yourself available.

If He brings something to mind, surrender your resistance and take the next obedient step.

Closing Prayer

Jehovah Rohi, I want to hear You and follow You. Show me where I have substituted religious activity for surrender, and give me grace to respond when You speak. Amen.

What has God already shown me that now requires a response?

Today, I will make room to listen—and when my Shepherd speaks, I will follow.
