When the Threat Keeps Circling

Psalm 59 comes from a frightening moment: Saul had sent men to watch David's house and kill him. David wasn't imagining danger. There really were people waiting for him.
Yet the refrain changes the center of the psalm:
God is his fortress.
That's important for those who have learned hypervigilance through difficult experiences. There are seasons when vigilance was necessary. But after the danger passes, the soul can continue standing guard at a door God has already secured.
The deliverance here isn't pretending there was never danger. It is discovering that David doesn't have to become his own fortress because God is.
Micro-surrender: I surrender the need to remain constantly on guard.

Prayer:
God, You are my fortress. Show me where I am still guarding what I can now entrust to You. Teach my soul to rest beneath Your protection. Amen.
