When You Keep Forgetting, God Keeps Being God

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Anchor:

“They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.” — Psalm 78:35

Psalm 78 is painfully honest about human inconsistency.

The people sinned. God disciplined them. They sought Him. They remembered Him.

And then they wandered again.

Their mouths said one thing while their hearts went another direction. Verse 37 tells us plainly: “Their heart was not steadfast toward him.”

There is our problem.

We often want our circumstances to become steady while our hearts remain unstable.

Yet tucked into this account of human inconsistency is a remarkable picture of God's character. He showed compassion. He remembered their frailty. He led His people. He redeemed them.

Their instability did not create instability in Him.

This does not mean our rebellion is insignificant or that God's grace gives us permission to continue wandering. Quite the opposite.

His constancy exposes our inconsistency and invites us back.

El Olam doesn't change to accommodate whichever version of us showed up this morning.

He remains holy.
He remains merciful.
He remains true.
He remains God.

And because He remains, we always know where “home” is.

Maybe you recognize yourself somewhere in Psalm 78. You meant what you prayed, but your attention wandered. You made a commitment and struggled to keep it. You remembered God's faithfulness and then anxiety convinced you to forget again.

Don't use your inconsistency as an excuse to run from God.

Let His consistency become your reason to return.

Heart Turn

Where has your heart been inconsistent with what your mouth has said about God?

Don't hide it or condemn yourself over it. Bring that area honestly before Him and ask Him to establish your heart in what is eternally true.

Prayer

El Olam, You are my Rock and my Redeemer. Forgive me for the places where my heart has wandered even while my mouth spoke faith. Thank You for being steadfast when I have been inconsistent. Draw me back to You, establish my heart in truth, and teach me to live faithfully before the God who never changes. Amen.
