When You Need Help but Also Need Your Heart Realigned

Scripture Reading: Psalm 86:1–17
Key Verse: “Teach me your way, O LORD, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.” — Psalm 86:11 (ESV)
When the Prayer Changes from Help Me to Teach Me
When trouble comes, our first prayer is often, “Lord, help me!”
And there is nothing wrong with that cry.
In Psalm 86, David repeatedly asks God to hear him, preserve his life, and show him mercy. He openly acknowledges his need and dependence.
But nestled among these petitions is a beautiful request.
David asks God to teach him His way and unite his heart to fear His name.
He recognizes that he needs more than rescue from his enemies. He needs a heart fully devoted to God.
How often do we ask God to remove the difficulty without inviting Him to address what is happening within us?
As we follow El Olam, we're learning that God's eternal truth must become more influential than our temporary emotions.
The Everlasting God doesn't merely hear our cries for help. He teaches us how to walk faithfully while we depend on Him.
David's prayer reminds us that seeking deliverance and seeking transformation can happen together.
Today's Refrain
Lord, don't just change my circumstances. Teach my heart to follow You.
A Prayer for Today
Everlasting Father, thank You for hearing me when I cry for help. Teach me Your ways and reveal where my heart has become divided. Unite my desires with Your truth so that I may walk faithfully before You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Today's Challenge
Pray Psalm 86:11 slowly and personally today.
Then ask yourself: What has been competing for my devotion, and what would it look like to surrender that area to God?
