When You Need God to Remember What Hurts
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 9:13–20 shifts from praise into petition. David asks God to see his affliction and to remember the suffering caused by injustice. This passage teaches us that prayer can hold both gratitude for past faithfulness and urgency for present pain.
One key word here is “affliction” (Hebrew: ʿaniy), which refers to being brought low, humbled, or oppressed. It is not only external hardship—it includes the emotional weight of being worn down by repeated struggle. David isn’t minimizing his pain; he’s placing it before the only One who can rightly judge it.
Many believers feel unseen when injustice lingers. Healing can feel stalled when wrongs go unaddressed. Psalm 9 reminds us that God does not forget suffering—He actively intervenes in His timing.
Prayer:
Jehovah Rophe, You see my affliction and the places where pain has humbled me. Heal the wounds caused by injustice and delay. I ask You to arise and remind the world—and my own heart—that You are righteous and attentive to the cries of Your people. Restore my hope as I trust You to act. Amen.
