The God Who Restores

by Torrie Slaughter

Today, we open our hearts to the rich truths found in Psalm 85, a psalm that sings of revival, renewal, and restoration. If you’ve ever found yourself in need of a reset—spiritually, emotionally, or physically—this psalm is an invitation to trust in the God who not only redeems but restores what was lost.

The psalmist begins by remembering:

“You, Lord, showed favor to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob. You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.” (Psalm 85:1-2, NIV)

It’s a powerful reminder that the story of God’s people is one of mercy after mistakes, favor after failure, and forgiveness that leads to freedom. The psalmist doesn’t dwell in regret—he reaches for revival, boldly asking God to do again what only He can: restore, renew, and refresh His people.

“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” (Psalm 85:6, ESV)

Is that your prayer today? A quiet longing for God to stir something new in your heart? Maybe you’re tired. Maybe you're carrying disappointment or waiting on a promise. Psalm 85 gives language to that ache and anchors it in hope.

What makes this psalm especially rich is not just the plea—but the confidence in God’s character.

“Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other.” (Psalm 85:10, ESV)

This poetic imagery reminds us that God’s restoration is holistic. He doesn’t just fix one part of our lives—He brings righteousness and peace, mercy and justice. He makes the path straight and walks with us through the valleys, building us up again with compassion and purpose.

💡 Reflection:

  • What in your life is in need of restoration?

  • Can you recall a time when God brought you back from a dry, weary place?

  • Are you ready to ask Him to revive you again?

Let Psalm 85 be a prayer on your lips today—a declaration that even when things feel broken or delayed, God is not done. His love is near. His promises are sure. And His restoration is coming.

🙏 Prayer:

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being the God who restores. Thank You for reviving our weary spirits and reminding us of Your past faithfulness. We lift our eyes to You today, asking for renewal—not just for ourselves, but for our homes, churches, and communities. Pour out Your mercy, breathe life into the dry places, and help us walk forward with hope.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
