Don’t Let What God Gave You Be Misunderstood
by Torrie Slaughter
There are moments in life when what God has done in you is clear… but how others interpret it is not.
Psalm 89 begins with a bold and unwavering declaration: “I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever.” Before addressing any tension, confusion, or uncertainty, the psalmist anchors himself in something unchanging—God’s faithfulness.
And that’s where peace begins.
Because if we’re honest, misunderstanding has a way of shaking us. When your obedience is questioned or your intentions are misread, it can feel like the ground beneath you is shifting. You start wondering: Did I hear God correctly? Should I explain myself? Should I defend what I did?
But the psalmist doesn’t start with people.
He starts with God.
He reminds himself—and us—that God’s covenant is established, His word is settled, and His authority stretches over all creation. Verses 8–13 paint a powerful picture: God rules the raging sea, stills the waves, and displays strength with His mighty arm. In other words, nothing is out of His control… including how your obedience is perceived.
That’s where peace becomes something deeper than emotion.
Peace is not found in being understood by others.
Peace is found in being aligned with God.
The tribes in Joshua 22 built an altar out of obedience, yet it was misunderstood as rebellion. But before resolution came explanation, there had to be a steady confidence in why they did what they did. Psalm 89 gives us that same grounding—it calls us back to the character of God when external voices get loud.
So when misunderstanding arises, don’t rush to defend yourself before you’ve anchored yourself.
Let your first response be remembrance.
God is faithful.
God sees.
God knows.
And what He has established in your life does not lose its truth just because someone else misreads it.
🙏🏽 Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your steadfast love and faithfulness that never changes. When I feel misunderstood or questioned, help me to anchor myself in who You are instead of what others think. Remind me that my peace comes from being aligned with You, not approved by people. Strengthen my heart to trust You fully and walk confidently in what You have called me to do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
✨ Action Step
Before responding to any misunderstanding today, pause and remind yourself of one truth about God’s character. Let that truth guide your response instead of your emotions.
