Choose Peace on Purpose

by Torrie Slaughter

What do you do when what you see doesn’t match what God said?

Psalm 89 takes a sharp turn here. After declaring God’s faithfulness, the psalmist now wrestles with what feels like contradiction. “But now you have cast off and rejected…” (v. 38). The tone shifts from confidence to confusion.

And if we’re honest, we’ve been there.

There are seasons where it feels like God’s promises are on pause. Where the peace you once felt now feels distant. Where what you believed with certainty is now being tested by reality.

But here’s what makes this Psalm powerful: the psalmist doesn’t walk away.
He stays in the conversation.

This is where peace becomes a decision.

Joshua 24 calls the people to choose whom they will serve. Not based on convenience, not based on circumstances—but based on covenant. In the same way, Psalm 89 models what it looks like to choose God even when emotions are unsettled.

Peace is not pretending everything is okay.
Peace is deciding that God is still trustworthy when everything doesn’t feel okay.

Jesus speaks of future trials in Luke 21, warning that difficult days will come. Yet He calls His followers to stand firm, to lift their heads, to remain watchful. Why? Because peace is sustained through perspective.

So today, if you find yourself in a moment of tension, don’t run from it.

Bring it to God. Speak honestly. Stay present.

And then… choose Him again.

🙏🏽 Prayer

Lord, even when I don’t understand what You are doing, I choose to trust You. Help me to remain steady when my emotions feel uncertain. Teach me how to stay in Your presence instead of pulling away. Strengthen my faith so that I can choose You daily, no matter what I see. In Jesus’ name, amen

Action Step

Identify one area where your expectations and reality don’t match. Surrender it to God today and choose to trust Him again in that space.
