Hearts on Fire: Trusting Through the Silence

by Torrie Slaughter

There are moments in every believer’s walk when God feels distant—when prayers seem to echo into a void and the fire of hope grows dim. Psalm 89:38–52 invites us into that raw space: the tension between God’s promises and our present pain. But for those with hearts on fire, this isn't the end of the story—it's the place where refined trust is forged.

🔥 When the Fire Feels Like Silence

“But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one.” (v. 38)

The psalmist begins with heartbreak, not praise. And maybe that’s where some of us are today—carrying unanswered questions, broken expectations, or weariness in the wait. But even lament is a form of worship when it’s brought before the Lord.

🔥 The Burn of Brokenness
Verses 39–45 recount defeat, dishonor, and apparent divine distance. The crown has fallen. The defenses are shattered. Enemies mock.

“You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground.” (v. 44)

This is the cry of a remnant—those still showing up even when everything seems to be falling apart. These aren’t just words of complaint. They are sparks of faith, trusting that if we can feel the loss, then we once had something beautiful with God—and He can restore it.

🔥 Crying Out from the Ashes

“How long, Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?” (v. 46)

We’ve all asked this in one form or another. But this psalm teaches us something important: real faith doesn’t silence hard questions—it anchors them in covenant promises. When our hearts burn with longing for God’s nearness, we don’t run from Him—we run to Him, even in pain.

🔥 Hope That Refuses to Die

“Lord, where is your former great love…?” (v. 49)

The psalm closes with a plea, not a conclusion. There’s no “happy ending” tied up in these verses—only relentless faith in a faithful God. And that’s what it means to be part of the remnant: to refuse to let the fire go out, even when all around us looks bleak.

🪧 Reflection:

  • What area of your life feels like God is distant or silent right now?

  • Can you bring your honest lament before the Lord, trusting He is still working behind the scenes?

🛐 Prayer:

Heavenly Father, even in the silence, we trust You. When life feels like ashes and the promises feel far away, stir our hearts with fresh fire. Remind us of Your covenant love and let us rise up as the remnant—anchored in truth, alive with hope, and ablaze with faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
