Holy Means He Doesn’t Adjust to Us—We Align to Him

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 99 doesn’t ease in—it establishes something immediately:
“The Lord reigns… He sits enthroned… He is holy.”

Not once. Not twice.
Three times the psalmist declares: He is holy.

That repetition isn’t poetic filler—it’s a warning and an invitation.

Because holiness means God is not like us.
He doesn’t bend to culture. He doesn’t adjust to preference. He doesn’t soften truth to make us comfortable.

He is perfectly just, perfectly righteous, perfectly set apart.

And yet… He invites us near.

The psalm highlights Moses, Aaron, and Samuel—men who called on the Lord and were answered. But here’s the detail we can’t miss:
“They kept His statutes and the decrees He gave them.” (Psalm 99:7)

They didn’t just cry out to God…
they aligned with Him.

We live in a time where many want access to God without alignment to God.
We want Him to answer, move, provide, and respond—without surrendering our will.

But God’s holiness means He remains consistent, even when we are not.

He forgives—but He also disciplines.
He is merciful—but He is still just.

And that’s good news.

Because if God adjusted to us, we would never rise.
But because He is holy, He calls us higher.

So today isn’t just about reverence—it’s about response.

Will you approach God casually… or consecrated?
Will you call on Him… and also follow Him?

Because the same God who answers prayer…
also requires transformation.

Prayer

Holy God, You are righteous, just, and set apart. Teach me to align my life with Your truth instead of expecting You to adjust to me. Help me walk in reverence, obedience, and a heart that honors who You are. Amen.
