The Lord Is King Forever
by Torrie Slaughter
Scripture Focus: Psalm 10:16-18
"The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror."
Psalm 10 concludes with a triumphant declaration of God’s eternal kingship and His care for the oppressed. Amidst the chaos of injustice and the arrogance of the wicked, the psalmist affirms that God reigns over all. This truth reminds us that no matter how dark or uncertain our circumstances may seem, God is sovereign, and His justice will prevail.
God’s Eternal Kingship
“The Lord is King forever and ever” (Psalm 10:16) is a bold proclamation of God’s sovereignty. His rule is not temporary or subject to change like earthly powers. While human kingdoms rise and fall, God’s reign endures throughout eternity. This assurance brings hope to believers, especially in times when it feels like evil is winning. The psalmist’s words remind us that the injustices of this world are temporary, but God’s justice is eternal.
This truth invites us to shift our perspective from the fleeting power of earthly rulers to the unchanging authority of God. When we acknowledge Him as King, we can rest in the knowledge that He is working all things together for His glory and the good of His people (Romans 8:28).
God’s Compassion for the Afflicted
The psalmist beautifully highlights God’s attentiveness to those who are hurting: “You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry” (Psalm 10:17). In a world that often ignores the pain of the marginalized, God’s heart is tender toward the oppressed and the fatherless. He not only hears their cries but also moves to defend and encourage them.
For believers, this is a reminder of God’s personal care for each of us. When we feel forgotten or overwhelmed, we can take comfort in knowing that God hears our prayers and understands our pain. His encouragement and protection are not distant or abstract; they are tangible expressions of His love.
God’s Justice Will Prevail
The psalmist ends with confidence in God’s justice: “so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror”(Psalm 10:18). This statement reflects the ultimate hope of every believer—that one day, all wrongs will be made right, and evil will no longer oppress the vulnerable. While we may not see the fullness of this promise in our lifetime, we can trust that God’s justice will come in His perfect timing.
This calls us to live with faith and perseverance, trusting in God’s ability to bring about His purposes. It also challenges us to reflect His character by advocating for justice and showing compassion to those in need.
