The Danger of Forgetting: Staying Anchored in God's Faithfulness
By Torrie Slaughter
Have you ever seen an answered prayer… and then quickly forgotten the miracle?
Psalm 106:13–31 captures the heart-wrenching reality of spiritual forgetfulness.
The people of Israel—rescued by God's mighty hand from Egypt—soon traded their trust for impatience.
They forgot His works, they demanded what they wanted now, and they bowed to things that could never save them.
"But they soon forgot what He had done and did not wait for His plan to unfold. In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wilderness they put God to the test."
(Psalm 106:13–14, NIV)
Instead of waiting on the greater blessing God was preparing, they settled for lesser things that ultimately poisoned their hearts.
In just a few verses, we see the spiral:
Impatience ➔ Idolatry ➔ Immorality ➔ Consequences.
And yet—even as judgment fell—God still raised up intercessors (like Phinehas) who stood in the gap, reminding us that repentance and obedience can stop the spiral.
This is not just ancient history.
It's a mirror held up to our own lives.
When we forget what God has already done, we become vulnerable to cravings, compromises, and quick fixes that pull us away from His best.
✨ Action Step:
Take five minutes today to intentionally remember a specific prayer God has answered for you—especially one that took time and patience.
Write a short note of thanksgiving or pray aloud, thanking Him again for being faithful even when waiting was hard.
When gratitude fills the gap, impatience loses its grip.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us for the times we have forgotten Your faithfulness and allowed impatience to lead us astray.
Teach us to trust Your timing and to treasure Your plans above our own cravings.
Thank You for the intercessors You raise up to call us back to You. Strengthen our hearts to wait well, remembering always that You are good and Your mercy endures forever.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
