Trusting God as Your Refuge

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Focus: Psalm 11:1
"In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: 'Flee like a bird to your mountain'?"

Psalm 11 is a declaration of unwavering trust in God, even when circumstances seem dire. David begins with a bold statement: “In the Lord I take refuge.” Despite the advice to flee from danger and the threats of the wicked, David places his confidence not in his own strength or safety but in the Lord’s sovereignty. This psalm reminds us that God is our unshakable refuge, the One who sees all and holds ultimate authority over justice and righteousness.

Trusting God Amid Chaos

David’s trust in God isn’t a denial of the danger he faces; he acknowledges the threats around him. “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3). However, instead of succumbing to fear, David chooses to focus on God’s power and faithfulness. He rejects the temptation to flee, knowing that his safety lies not in retreating but in resting under God’s protection.

When life feels overwhelming and the foundations seem to crumble, we often face the same choice: Will we flee in fear or take refuge in God’s promises? Psalm 46:1 reinforces this truth: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

God’s Sovereignty and Justice

David declares that God is seated on His heavenly throne, watching over all (Psalm 11:4). This image of God as the sovereign ruler reminds us that nothing escapes His notice. He examines both the righteous and the wicked, ensuring that justice will ultimately prevail.

This perspective can bring comfort when we feel overwhelmed by injustice or the brokenness of the world. Knowing that God sees and will act according to His perfect justice allows us to let go of fear and focus on living faithfully.

The Promise for the Righteous

The psalm concludes with a powerful promise: “For the Lord is righteous, He loves justice; the upright will see His face” (Psalm 11:7). This assurance of God’s presence is a source of hope for believers. Our ultimate refuge is not just in the temporary protection God provides but in the eternal relationship we have with Him.

This verse reminds us that living uprightly—choosing to trust and follow God—leads to the greatest reward: intimacy with Him. Revelation 22:4 echoes this promise, saying of the righteous, “They will see His face.”
