God Sees What You’re Hiding

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 110 is majestic—every word drenched in power, prophecy, and divine purpose. Yet its authority doesn’t just shine on the battlefield or the throne—it exposes the condition of the heart.

“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’”(v.1)

This declaration sets the tone: God has appointed His King, and His rule will be unmatched. It’s the same King Jesus references in Matthew 22:44, asserting His divine authority. And it’s that same divine authority that disqualifies Saul in 1 Samuel 15.

God gave Saul a clear command—but Saul decided partial obedience was good enough. He spared what looked valuable, built a monument to himself, and then justified it with a religious excuse: “I was going to offer it to the Lord.”But the prophet Samuel responded with piercing truth:

“To obey is better than sacrifice.” (1 Sam. 15:22)

That’s the heart of today’s devotional: obedience starts in the heart, not in outward appearances or public rituals.

Psalm 110 doesn’t just speak of Christ’s kingship—it honors His priesthood:

“You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” (v.4)

Jesus doesn’t just reign with power—He ministers with purity. And He sees the difference between image and integrity.

So when God sends Samuel to anoint David in 1 Samuel 16, the message is clear:

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at... the Lord looks at the heart.” (v.7)

In contrast, John 8 shows Jesus confronting hypocrisy once again. A woman caught in adultery is brought before Him, yet the ones with stones in their hands are hiding their own sin. Jesus stoops down, not to ignore, but to invite reflection: What are you hiding?

📝 Journal Prompt:

Am I presenting sacrifice when God is asking for obedience? What am I afraid God will see if I come to Him uncovered?

🙏🏽 Prayer

Lord, You see through every layer. You know the motives behind my worship and the heart behind my choices. Purify me. Let my obedience not be performance, but surrender. Thank You for the mercy You extend through Jesus, my King and Priest. Amen.
