The Weight of Favor

by Torrie Slaughter

Favor sounds beautiful—until it starts to cost you something.

Psalm 112 paints a picture of the righteous person:

“Blessed is the one who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commands.” (v.1)

This blessing isn’t about fleeting success or shallow applause—it’s rooted in reverence, integrity, and a life aligned with God’s commands. This is deep favor—the kind that produces legacy, stability, and light in the darkness (v.4). But here’s the truth: favor also attracts friction.

Just ask David.

In 1 Samuel 18, after David’s victory over Goliath, the crowds begin singing his praises—and that’s when Saul’s insecurity ignites. Scripture tells us:

“Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him.” (v.12)

David did nothing wrong. He was faithful. He honored God. He obeyed. And yet, that obedience stirred jealousy and spiritual warfare.

Psalm 112:7 offers a striking mirror:

“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”

That’s what favor looks like under pressure—a steadfast heart, even when arrows are flying. In John 8, Jesus faces intense opposition as He declares, “Before Abraham was, I am.” (v.58) The weight of His identity enraged His enemies—but He never wavered. Why? Because obedience to the Father outweighed public approval.

So what about you?

Is God’s favor resting on you in a way that’s starting to stretch your capacity, test your humility, or challenge your relationships?

Favor isn’t always light—but it is always right when it comes from the Lord. Let your obedience anchor you in the middle of misunderstanding.

📝 Journal Prompt:

Am I asking for God’s favor without preparing for its weight? How can I steward His blessings with steadfast trust?

🙏🏽 Prayer

Father, thank You for Your favor. Teach me to carry it with humility, courage, and unwavering obedience. Help me trust You when the blessings I carry attract opposition. Strengthen my heart to stay rooted in Your love and to reflect the light of Your Kingdom wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
