Trusting God in the Waiting

by Torrie Slaughter

Scripture Focus: Psalm 13:1–6
"How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?" (Psalm 13:1)

Psalm 13 captures the raw emotion of waiting on God. David begins with a cry of anguish, questioning if God has forgotten him. These words reflect the depths of his struggle—a wilderness season where hope feels distant, and despair seems near. Yet, by the end of the psalm, David’s tone shifts to one of trust and rejoicing: “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.”

This psalm teaches us how to navigate the tension between waiting and trusting, reminding us that God’s silence doesn’t equal His absence.

Honest Questions, Honest Faith

David’s cry of “How long?” is one that many of us can relate to. Whether it’s waiting for healing, resolution, or direction, the delay can feel unbearable. But David doesn’t stop at lament—he brings his questions to God. This shows us that faith doesn’t mean suppressing our doubts; it means bringing them to the One who can handle them.

  • Key Insight: God welcomes our honest prayers, even when they’re filled with frustration or doubt. Bringing our struggles to Him is an act of faith.

A Shift in Perspective

David’s turning point comes in verse 5: “But I trust in your unfailing love.” The circumstances haven’t changed, but David’s perspective has. He chooses to focus on God’s character rather than his situation.

When we feel forgotten or overwhelmed, we can cling to the truth of God’s unfailing love and salvation. Lamentations 3:22–23 reminds us: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

  • Key Insight: Trusting God means shifting our focus from what we can see to what we know about His unchanging character.

Joy in God’s Salvation

David concludes the psalm with rejoicing: “My heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me” (Psalm 13:5–6). Even in the waiting, David remembers God’s past faithfulness and finds hope in His promises.

Our ultimate hope is found in the salvation God provides through Jesus Christ. No matter what wilderness season we’re walking through, we can rejoice in the truth that God is with us, He is for us, and His promises are unshakable.

  • Key Insight: Praising God in the waiting strengthens our faith and reminds us of His goodness.
