Anointed for the Appointed

by Torrie Slaughter

Scriptures: 1 Kings 1:1–53, Acts 4:1–37, Psalm 124, Proverbs 16:24
Theme Verse: “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” — Psalm 124:8

There’s a moment in every spiritual journey when you realize: you made it out—but not by your own hand.
David declares it. Peter lives it. Solomon receives it. And Psalm 124 sings it: If the Lord had not been on our side…

This is a psalm for those who know the snare should’ve held, the enemy should’ve won, the wave should’ve drowned you—but God stepped in and broke the trap. When you know you’ve been anointed for a purpose, it’s not pride that sustains you—it’s praise.

📖

If the Lord Had Not Been on Our Side…
David opens the psalm with a challenge: Say it out loud. Recognize that survival was not luck—it was divine intervention. In 1 Kings 1, Solomon is crowned despite political maneuvering and unrest. In Acts 4, Peter and John stand bold after healing a man in Jesus’ name—and the religious leaders can’t deny it. Why? Because God was on their side.

The Imagery of Opposition
David’s metaphors are intense—“swallowed alive,” “floods,” “raging waters.” This is what spiritual attack feels like. And yet… we’re still here. The very fact that you’re reading this is proof: the waters didn’t sweep you away. The attacks didn’t consume you. The snare broke.

Escape and Empowerment
“We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare…” (v.7)
Not only did God deliver you—He’s now sending you. This is what we see in Acts 4. The same Peter who once denied Jesus is now declaring Him without fear. What changed? The shift was spiritual—and it made him bold. And you too have been set free to soar into your purpose.

Our Help is in the Name of the Lord
Verse 8 anchors the entire week: not your strength, not your strategy—His name. That name brings healing. That name establishes legacy. That name is your protection, your provision, your confidence, and your calling.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What are the “snares” God has broken in your life recently?

  2. How is God calling you to walk boldly now that you’ve been freed?

  3. Are you anchoring your next steps in His name, or in your own efforts?

🛠 Action Step:

Take five minutes to write a “Psalm 124-style” praise list. Begin each line with:
“If the Lord had not been on my side…”
This will help you recognize and reclaim the moments where God clearly intervened in your story.

🙏 Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word that guides and strengthens us. As we study today, open our hearts and minds to understand Your sovereignty and the ways You are continually working in our lives. Help us to build strong foundations for the future, grounded in Your truth and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
