Rediscovering the Word
by Torrie Slaughter
Scriptures: 2 Kings 22:3–23:30, Acts 21:37–22:16, Psalm 1, Proverbs 18:11–12
What happens when the Word of God is rediscovered—not just in a nation, but in a heart?
Psalm 1 opens the entire Book of Psalms with a choice—a split path. One leads to fruitfulness. The other, futility. The difference? One is rooted, the other is blown away.
It’s the very crossroads we see in 2 Kings 22–23, where a young king named Josiah stumbles upon something forgotten… the Book of the Law. And what happens next is nothing short of revival.
🌳 Delight in the Word
“Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1–2)
Josiah could’ve ignored the scroll. He could’ve shrugged it off as old, outdated, or inconvenient. But instead—he tore his clothes (2 Kings 22:11). He wept. He repented. And he realigned his entire kingdom based on what he read.
That’s what it looks like to delight in God’s Word: not just reading it, but letting it reroute our steps.
🌊 Planted by Streams
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water…” (v. 3)
You can’t flourish without a source. Josiah’s reforms didn’t just come from strategy—they came from Scripture. He tore down idols, reinstated Passover, and cleansed the land.
Why? Because when your roots go deep, your fruit grows bold.
What streams are you planted by today—God’s truth, or popular opinion?
🌬️ The Chaff and the Choice
“The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.” (v. 4)
It’s a sobering contrast. Those who reject God’s Word may appear secure—but like chaff, they are unstable, light, and directionless.
Josiah chose a different path. And in doing so, he left a legacy of righteousness in a culture drowning in rebellion.
🌀 Reflection Questions:
Is God’s Word still reshaping me—or have I grown comfortable with what I already know?
Am I acting like chaff—drifting—or a tree—rooted?
What “idols” in my life need to be torn down so God’s Word can take center stage?
🙏🏽 Prayer:
Lord,
Just like Josiah, we want to rediscover Your Word—not just read it, but respond to it. Help us to delight in Your truth, root ourselves in Your wisdom, and walk in the way that leads to life. Let our lives reflect trees planted beside Your living water—strong, steady, and fruitful in every season.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
🔁 Next Step:
Reread Psalm 1 slowly. Circle or highlight the actions of the blessed person. Then write a short prayer or journal entry choosing that path for yourself today.
