When Fear Still Lives in the Body

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 18 opens with a confession before it ever tells a story:
“I love You, Lord, my strength.”

This is what we say when fear has been loud for a long time and we are choosing trust anyway.

David describes God as a rock, a fortress, a deliverer—not because life is calm, but because chaos has already tried to take him under. These verses teach us how to pray when our body remembers danger even after our mind says, “I’m safe now.”

Read this Psalm slowly and notice how physical the language is. Rock. Shield. Refuge. Healing is not only emotional—it’s embodied.

Proverbs 4 urges us not to abandon wisdom, because wisdom guards us. Healing is not forgetting the past; it’s learning how to be protected in the present.

Prayer Pause:
“Lord, be my strength where fear still tries to live.”

Healing Step:
Place your hand over your chest while reading Psalm 18. Let your breathing slow with the words.
