When the Storm Shakes the Surface but Not the Throne
by Torrie Slaughter
📖 “The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever.” – Psalm 29:10 (ESV)
🔍 Reflection:
When the winds howl, when resistance rises, when foundations feel like they’re cracking—Psalm 29 reminds us of one unshakable truth: God is still on the throne.
This psalm reads like thunder. It’s bold, majestic, almost cinematic in its imagery. David opens with a charge to the heavens themselves: “Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.” This isn’t casual worship—it’s a divine command to recognize God’s unmatched power and splendor.
What follows is a poetic storm:
The voice of the Lord thunders over waters (v.3)
It shatters the cedars of Lebanon (v.5)
It flashes with fire, shakes the wilderness, and strips the forests bare (vv.7–9)
And yet—right there in the chaos—David declares something astonishing:
“The Lord sits enthroned over the flood…”
Ezra reminds us that returning to rebuild doesn’t always come with smooth sailing. Opposition rises. Progress is halted. But God's plan never wavers. In Ezra 5–6, the people build again, and through the authority of God—even foreign kings support the work. The Word of the Lord, like the thunder in Psalm 29, breaks through every obstacle.
The power of God’s voice is not just destructive—it’s constructive. It breaks what needs to fall and establishes what must stand.
Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 3:11—“For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” The foundation of faith is not our feelings, progress, or comfort—it is the unchanging person and power of Jesus.
When the storm hits, we don’t ask, “Is God still here?” We declare, “The Lord still reigns.”
💡 Takeaway:
You may feel like everything is shaking, but the foundation of your faith—the voice of God, the Word of Christ—hasn’t moved. Let Psalm 29 anchor you today. Worship isn’t just a reaction to blessing. It’s a weapon in the storm and a declaration that God reigns above every flood, setback, and season of silence.
🙏🏽 Prayer:
Lord, when the storm rises and resistance comes, let me hear Your voice louder than my fear. Thank You for being enthroned forever—not just in the heavens, but in the heart of my chaos. Help me worship not based on my feelings, but on Your faithfulness. You are my firm foundation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
✨ Next Step:
Read Psalm 29 aloud today. Let your voice join the chorus of heaven that declares God’s strength and glory. As you do, ask yourself: What storm have I allowed to steal my worship? Then, take it to the throne and trade it for His peace.
