Calm Under Fire: Trusting God’s Timing

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 37:1–11

It’s hard to stay calm when it looks like the wrong people are winning. David begins Psalm 37 with a direct command: “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong” (v.1). Instead of obsessing over injustice, he invites us to shift our focus: “Trust in the Lord and do good… Take delight in the Lord” (vv.3–4).

Delighting in God means finding our deepest joy in Him — letting His presence satisfy us more than any earthly success. As we do, our desires begin to align with His, and we can trust His promise to act in His perfect time.

David assures us that when we commit our way to the Lord, He will make our righteousness shine like the dawn (vv.5–6). And perhaps the hardest part: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him” (v.7). Stillness here isn’t inactivity — it’s active trust, resting in the truth that God is working behind the scenes even when we can’t see it.

The psalm warns that anger, bitterness, and envy only lead to harm (v.8), but those who hope in the Lord will inherit His promises (v.9). In God’s kingdom, it’s the meek — the humble and surrendered — who enjoy lasting peace (v.11).

When we choose stillness over striving and hope over hostility, we stand as a quiet but powerful witness that our confidence is in God, not in circumstances.

Next Step: Identify one area where you’re fretting over someone else’s success or timing. Release it to God in prayer today, and intentionally replace that worry with an act of kindness or worship.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to be still, to trust Your timing, and to rest in the confidence that You will bring justice and peace in Your perfect way.
