Living with the End in Mind

By Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 39:1–13

David begins this psalm with a determined resolve: “I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin” (v.1). He chooses silence in the presence of the wicked, but that silence becomes a heavy burden — “my anguish increased… the fire burned; then I spoke” (vv.2–3). Sometimes holding back is wise, but there are moments when the weight of unspoken words must be poured out before God.

In his prayer, David asks for perspective: “Show me… the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is” (v.4). He realizes life is brief — “Everyone is but a breath” (v.5). Even those who seem secure are just as temporary. This awareness shifts his hope: “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you” (v.7).

David confesses his sin, submits to God’s discipline, and acknowledges the refining purpose in it (vv.8–11). The psalm closes with a raw plea for God’s mercy and presence, a reminder that we are sojourners here — our true home is with Him (vv.12–13).

Psalm 39 invites us to live with eternity in view. It calls us to measure our days not in accomplishments or possessions, but in faithfulness to God, honest prayer, and a heart anchored in hope that cannot be shaken by the brevity of life.

Next Step: Today, set aside time to pray Psalm 39 out loud, asking God to give you a clear perspective on what matters most — and to help you live in a way that reflects eternal priorities.

Prayer: Lord, teach me to number my days, to guard my words, and to keep my hope anchored in You alone.
