Singing in the Cave

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 57:1–11

“Have mercy on me, my God… for in You I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until the disaster has passed.” Hiding in a cave from Saul, David pours out his fear and finds safety beneath God’s wings. His refuge is not escape, but intimacy with the Almighty.

As he cries out to God Most High—El Elyon—David’s focus shifts from his enemies to God’s greatness: “Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth.” Worship lifts his eyes from the cave to the throne, from fear to faith.

Even before deliverance, David declares: “My heart, O God, is steadfast… I will sing and make music.” What a picture of faith! Surrounded by danger, he chooses to praise, confident that God’s love and faithfulness reach higher than the heavens and wider than the skies.

Psalm 57 reminds us that refuge is found not in escaping the storm, but in resting under God’s wings. And even in the cave, we can sing—because His love and faithfulness never fail.

Prayer: Lord, shelter me under Your wings. Make my heart steadfast, and let my song rise to You even in the darkest places. Amen.
