God, the Righteous Judge
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 58:1–11
“Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity?” David’s piercing question cuts to the heart of injustice. Leaders who should defend truth instead twist it, and the powerless suffer under their corruption. His cry echoes ours: Where is justice?
David does not soften his prayer—he asks God to shatter the power of the wicked. These words may feel uncomfortable, but they reveal a heart longing for God’s righteousness to prevail where human justice has failed. It’s not revenge—it’s dependence on the Judge who sees what others ignore.
The psalm ends with assurance: “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judges the earth.”Evil may appear to triumph for a season, but God will have the last word. His justice will stand, and His people will rejoice when wrongs are made right.
Psalm 58 calls us to hold tension: to grieve injustice, to cry out for God’s intervention, and to trust His perfect timing. Our confidence is not in flawed systems, but in the righteous Judge who will one day set all things right.
Prayer: Lord, when injustice weighs heavy, remind me that You see and You will act. Keep me steadfast in faith as I trust in Your perfect justice. Amen.
