“When God Feels Far—but Isn’t”

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 22 opens with words many believers are afraid to say out loud: “My God, why have You forsaken me?”
This psalm gives us permission to be honest without abandoning faith. David isn’t denying God’s presence—he’s expressing the pain of not feeling it.

What’s powerful here is that this cry exists within covenant. David calls Him “my God,” even in confusion. Lament, in Scripture, is not unbelief—it is trust expressed through tears.

This psalm reminds us that silence does not equal absence. God can be near even when comfort feels distant.

Prayer:
Lord, help me trust You when my emotions don’t align with Your promises. Teach me to bring my honesty to You instead of withdrawing from You.

Action Step:
Write one honest sentence to God today about how you’re really feeling—and end it by calling Him “my God.”
