Thirsting for God

by Torrie Slaughter

“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.” (Psalm 63:1)

David’s words come from the wilderness, but his greatest hunger isn’t for food or water—it’s for God’s presence. His thirst is not superficial; it is soul-deep, the kind of longing that nothing in this world can satisfy.

He remembers the sanctuary, God’s power and glory, and declares: “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you” (vv. 2–3). Even in barren places, David’s worship is fueled by the truth that God’s love surpasses every earthly treasure.

This psalm invites us to ask: when life feels dry, where do we turn? To distractions and substitutes—or to the God who alone can quench our deepest thirst?

Takeaway:
True fulfillment isn’t found in plenty or in comfort but in God’s presence. His love is better than life itself.

🙏 Closing Prayer:
Father, ignite in us a holy thirst for You. Teach us to seek Your presence above all else and to remember that Your love satisfies in every wilderness season. May our lips glorify You today and always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
