From Despair to Praise
by Torrie Slaughter
Key Verse: “For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.” (Psalm 22:24)
In this section of Psalm 22, David transitions from lament to praise, recognizing God’s faithfulness in hearing his cry for help. It’s a reminder that, even in moments of deep anguish, God is present and working for our good. David’s declaration of trust is a call for all people and nations to join in worship, celebrating God’s deliverance and sovereignty.
Verses 22-24: The Transition to Praise
I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly, I will praise you. You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help
As the psalmist's plea for deliverance is answered, the tone shifts dramatically. The journey from desolation to adoration begins with a declaration of God's goodness. In times of trial, we can follow suit – lifting our voices in praise, even when circumstances appear bleak. Worship becomes an anthem of trust, acknowledging that God not only hears but responds to our cries for help.
Psalms 22:25-31: A Call to Universal Worship
From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly; before those who fear you, I will fulfill my vows. The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him—may your hearts live forever! (Psalm 22:25-26)
When we feel overwhelmed by challenges, this psalm encourages us to shift our focus from our circumstances to God’s faithfulness. He hears our prayers, sees our pain, and works for His glory in ways we may not yet understand.
Reflection: How can you turn your lament into praise today, trusting that God is listening to your cries?
Practical Steps to Praise and Worship:
Declare God's Name: In your personal space and within your community, declare the name of the Lord. Speak of His goodness and faithfulness, magnifying His presence.
Fulfill Vows of Praise: As you experience God's deliverance, make intentional vows to praise Him. Fulfill these promises not out of duty but as a heartfelt response to His love.
Extend Worship Beyond Yourself: Envision a world where all people, regardless of their circumstances, join in praising God. Actively seek ways to bring the message of hope and worship to those around you.
Psalms 22:19-31 teaches us that worship is not reserved for the mountaintop experiences alone. It is birthed in the depths of our need, finding its full expression in the recognition of God's deliverance. As believers, let us echo the psalmist's journey – from desolation to adoration, making praise a continuous rhythm in our lives.
