When Rejection Meets Restoration
by Torrie Slaughter
Reading: Psalm 69:19–36
“You know how I am scorned, disgraced, and shamed; all my enemies are before you.” (v.19)
Rejection has a way of cutting to the core. David’s words in Psalm 69 remind us of what it feels like to be despised, abandoned, and brokenhearted. “Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless.” (v.20). If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. God sees. He knows. He draws near.
This psalm also points us forward to Jesus, who was given vinegar to drink in His suffering (v.21). Christ Himself bore rejection, betrayal, and pain. That means when you walk through grief, you walk a path your Savior understands completely.
David’s raw cry for vengeance reminds us that God invites our honesty. He can handle our anger, our grief, and our longing for justice. But David doesn’t stay there—he shifts: “But as for me, afflicted and in pain—may your salvation, God, protect me.” (v.29). Even in the middle of hurt, he chooses praise.
The psalm closes with hope: “The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.” (v.33). God doesn’t just hear; He rebuilds. The places that feel ruined today can become testimonies of His restoration tomorrow.
Closing Prayer
Lord, You see the places in my heart that are heavy with rejection and pain. Remind me that You never turn away, and that Your love restores what is broken. Teach me to praise You even in the pain, trusting that You are rebuilding my life for Your glory. Amen.
