Rise & Reign: When God Seems Silent
by Torrie Slaughter
(Psalm 74:1–23)
Have you ever cried out to God and felt only silence? That’s the cry of Asaph in Psalm 74. His world has crumbled, the sanctuary destroyed, and his faith feels shaken: “Why have You rejected us, O God?” (v.1). The pain isn’t just about loss—it’s about the fear that God is absent.
But in the middle of his lament, Asaph shifts. “But God is my King from long ago; He brings salvation on the earth”(v.12). He remembers God’s past victories—splitting the sea, ruling over creation, conquering chaos. Though God feels distant, His covenant and power remain unchanged.
This psalm reminds us that lament is not faithlessness—it’s faith expressed through honesty. We are invited to grieve, question, and cry out, but also to remember. When circumstances scream “God is gone,” we anchor ourselves in what we know: He is still King, still sovereign, and still faithful.
The psalm closes with bold prayer: “Rise up, O God, and defend your cause” (v.22). That’s the courage of faith—choosing to trust that God’s silence is not abandonment, but an invitation to deeper dependence.
Closing Prayer
Father, when Your silence feels heavy, remind me of who You are. Anchor me in Your past faithfulness and renew my trust in Your sovereign hand. Rise up, O God, in my life and show Yourself strong. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
