Let Everything That Has Breath Praise the Lord
by Torrie Slaughter
Scripture:
"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord."
— Psalm 150:6
Psalm 150 is a triumphant conclusion to the Book of Psalms, calling all of creation to praise the Lord. It is a joyful crescendo of worship, filled with energy and purpose. This psalm reminds us that our ultimate purpose is to glorify God, and it encourages us to do so with every resource and breath we have.
Let’s explore the themes of this powerful psalm and consider how we can live lives of unceasing praise.
Where to Praise God
"Praise God in His sanctuary; praise Him in His mighty heavens."
— Psalm 150:1
The psalm begins by inviting us to praise God both in His sanctuary and in the heavens. This dual focus reminds us that worship is universal. Whether in a place of corporate worship or in the vast expanse of creation, God’s presence is everywhere, and He is worthy of praise wherever we are.
Reflection:
Where do you experience God’s presence most powerfully? Take time to praise Him today, whether you’re in a church, at home, or surrounded by nature.
Why We Praise God
"Praise Him for His acts of power; praise Him for His surpassing greatness."
— Psalm 150:2
The psalmist gives us two reasons to praise God: His mighty works and His greatness. God’s acts of power remind us of His sovereignty over all things, while His surpassing greatness points to His character—His love, mercy, and holiness.
Reflection:
What mighty works has God done in your life? Reflect on His greatness and thank Him for His presence and provision.
How to Praise God
"Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise Him with the harp and lyre, praise Him with timbrel and dancing, praise Him with the strings and pipe, praise Him with the clash of cymbals, praise Him with resounding cymbals."
— Psalm 150:3-5
This section of the psalm invites us to praise God with music, movement, and enthusiasm. The variety of instruments and actions suggests that there is no single “right” way to worship. Whether through singing, dancing, playing an instrument, or simply lifting your hands, worship is an expression of the heart.
Reflection:
How do you express your praise to God? Experiment with a new form of worship this week, such as journaling, singing, or dancing.
Who Should Praise God
"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord."
— Psalm 150:6
The psalm ends with an all-encompassing invitation: if you have breath, you are called to praise the Lord. This verse reminds us that worship is not limited to a specific group of people—it is the purpose of all creation. Every living thing is invited to join the symphony of praise that glorifies God.
Reflection:
How are you using your breath to praise the Lord? Consider how your words, actions, and life reflect God’s glory.
