Psalm 42

Provision in Spiritual Dry Seasons

by Torrie Slaughter

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God.” — Psalm 42:1

Spiritual dryness can be one of the most discouraging experiences for a believer. You still believe, you still show up, yet the sense of closeness you once felt seems distant. Psalm 42 gives language to that ache. The psalmist remembers seasons of joy and wonders why his soul now feels downcast. Instead of pretending everything is fine, he brings his thirst directly to God.

Jehovah Jireh provides not only answers but renewed desire. The longing you feel is not evidence of failure; it is evidence of life. A thirsty soul is a soul that still knows where satisfaction is found. The psalmist speaks to himself, urging his heart to hope in God again. Sometimes growth looks like choosing trust even when emotions lag behind.

God’s provision in dry seasons often comes through remembrance. By recalling past faithfulness, the psalmist strengthens present hope. When you cannot feel God’s nearness, you can still rely on His proven character. He provides stability when feelings fluctuate.

Reflection: Are you mistaking spiritual thirst for spiritual weakness?

Prayer: Lord, renew my desire for You. When I feel distant, draw me closer and remind me of Your faithfulness. Satisfy my soul with Your presence. Amen.
