— Psalm 55

Trusting God Through Betrayal

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 55 explores one of the most painful human experiences: betrayal by someone close. David describes the emotional weight of being wounded not by an enemy, but by a trusted companion.

“My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me.” (Psalm 55:4, ESV)

David speaks openly about his distress. Scripture does not hide the reality that betrayal deeply affects the heart. When trust is broken, confusion and grief often follow. Yet David brings his pain directly to God rather than allowing it to isolate him.

“For it is not an enemy who taunts me—then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me—then I could hide from him.” (Psalm 55:12, ESV)

The pain here is relational. David expected loyalty from someone who instead contributed to his suffering. Many believers encounter similar moments when relationships fracture or trust is violated. In these moments, the temptation can be to withdraw completely or allow bitterness to take root.

“But I call to God, and the Lord will save me.” (Psalm 55:16, ESV)

Instead of allowing betrayal to define his future, David returns to prayer. He recognizes that God remains present even when human relationships fail. Turning to the Lord restores stability and perspective.

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.” (Psalm 55:22, ESV)

This verse becomes the heart of the psalm. God invites us to release the weight of betrayal into His care. Carrying that burden alone will eventually exhaust the soul, but surrendering it to God allows healing to begin.

As you pray through Psalm 55 today, bring any unresolved pain or disappointment before the Lord. He understands every wound and every complicated emotion.

Trust that God can sustain your heart even when others have failed you. His faithfulness remains steady when human loyalty falters.
