📖 March 20 — Psalm 63

When God Becomes Your Deepest Desire

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 63 was written while David was in the wilderness of Judah. The physical setting of the psalm reflects the spiritual theme running through it: deep longing for God in the middle of a dry place.

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you.” (Psalm 63:1, ESV)

David compares his desire for God to physical thirst in a dry land. In a desert environment, water becomes the most valuable resource. Without it, survival is impossible.

David uses that same imagery to describe his relationship with God.

“My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.” (Psalm 63:5, ESV)

Although David is physically in the wilderness, he declares that true satisfaction comes from God’s presence. The environment around him may be dry, but his spirit remains nourished through worship and remembrance of the Lord.

“When I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night.” (Psalm 63:6, ESV)

Even in quiet nighttime hours, David turns his thoughts toward God. Instead of allowing fear or worry to dominate his mind, he fills those moments with meditation on the Lord’s faithfulness.

“Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” (Psalm 63:3, ESV)

This statement reveals the heart of the psalm. David’s relationship with God has become more valuable to him than life itself. When God becomes the center of our desire, every other pursuit finds its proper place.

As you reflect on Psalm 63 today, consider what your heart truly longs for. In seasons that feel spiritually dry, God invites His people to seek Him deeply.

The One who satisfies thirsty souls is still near.

Seek Him early, and let your heart rejoice in His presence.
