📖 March 21 — Psalm 64

When Hidden Attacks Meet God’s Justice

by Torrie Slaughter

Psalm 64 speaks to moments when opposition operates quietly and strategically. David describes enemies who do not always attack openly but instead work in secret, spreading harm through hidden plans and damaging words.

“Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.” (Psalm 64:1, ESV)

David begins by bringing his concerns directly to God. He does not pretend the situation is easy. Fear, uncertainty, and anxiety are real emotions when people feel targeted or misunderstood. Yet the psalm reminds us that prayer is the first place we bring those fears.

“Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers.” (Psalm 64:2, ESV)

David acknowledges that some battles happen behind the scenes. Plans may be formed quietly. Conversations may take place out of view. Narratives may spread without our knowledge. But nothing that happens in secret escapes God’s attention.

“Who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows.” (Psalm 64:3, ESV)

Once again Scripture reminds us that words can become weapons. False accusations, harsh criticism, and distorted stories can wound deeply. Yet David refuses to fight these battles on his own terms.

Instead, he entrusts the outcome to God.

“But God shoots his arrow at them; they are wounded suddenly.” (Psalm 64:7, ESV)

The psalm turns at this moment. What the wicked intended for harm becomes the very place where God demonstrates His justice. David does not celebrate revenge; he expresses confidence that the Lord will ultimately reveal truth and deal with what is hidden.

“Let the righteous one rejoice in the Lord and take refuge in him.” (Psalm 64:10, ESV)

The final encouragement is simple: when believers face hidden opposition, their response is not panic but refuge in God. The Lord sees what others do not see. He understands what others misunderstand.

As you reflect on Psalm 64 today, remember that God is aware of every hidden battle you face. Nothing spoken in secret escapes His notice.

Place your confidence in the Lord who brings truth to light and guards the hearts of His people.
