When You Feel Overwhelmed, Keep Calling
by Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 69 brings us into a place of deep honesty. The psalmist does not hide his distress—he brings it fully before God.
“Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck.” (Psalm 69:1, ESV)
There are moments when life feels overwhelming. This psalm gives language to those experiences. Faith does not require us to pretend—we are invited to be honest with God.
“I am weary with my crying out; my throat is parched.” (Psalm 69:3, ESV)
Even in weariness, the psalmist continues to call out. Persistence in prayer is not always loud or confident. Sometimes it is simply the refusal to stop turning toward God.
“But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness.” (Psalm 69:13, ESV)
There is a shift here—from desperation to trust. The psalmist anchors his hope not in his situation changing immediately, but in God’s steadfast love.
“Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.” (Psalm 69:16, ESV)
This is where confidence is restored. Not because everything is resolved, but because God’s character remains unchanged.
As you reflect on Psalm 69 today, remember that you can bring every part of your experience before God—the struggle, the questions, and the hope.
He is not distant from your cry.
Reflection Question:
Where do you need to be more honest with God about what you are experiencing right now?
