Lead with God’s Heart
By Torrie Slaughter
In a world filled with power grabs, self-promotion, and leadership that often seeks to serve itself, Psalm 72 offers a refreshing and holy contrast. It’s a prayer—not for popularity or political gain—but for God’s justice and righteousness to fill the heart of the one who leads.
“Give the king Your justice, O God, and Your righteousness to the royal son!” (Psalm 72:1, ESV)
This psalm, attributed to Solomon, sets the tone for what godly leadership should look like. Solomon isn't asking for more power—he’s asking for God’s perspective. His prayer reveals a heart that longs to lead well, not for his own name, but to see God’s justice established and His people cared for.
🪞 Leadership That Reflects the King
Whether you’re leading a ministry, a home, a classroom, a business—or simply leading yourself—this passage speaks directly to you.
Because leadership is influence. And Psalm 72 reminds us that our influence should be rooted in compassion, integrity, and humility.
Godly leadership:
Defends the cause of the poor (v. 4)
Crushes oppression, not people
Brings refreshment like rain on mown grass (v. 6)
Results in flourishing, peace, and honor for God
This isn’t soft leadership—it’s strong because it’s surrendered.
Solomon desired to be the kind of king whose reign would cause others to praise God, not him. That’s legacy-building leadership. That’s the kind of life that brings God glory.
🌍 A Vision for Kingdom Impact
As the psalm expands, we see Solomon’s desire for his leadership to have a global reach:
“May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him!” (v. 11)
Ultimately, Psalm 72 is also a messianic prayer, pointing ahead to the perfect King—Jesus Christ, who would fulfill every line of this prayer in ways Solomon never could.
Jesus is the only One whose leadership brings true justice and lasting peace. And as His followers, we’re called to reflect His heart—especially when we have influence.
🔄 Reflection:
Are you leading with God’s heart—or with your own preferences and plans?
What would change in your leadership if justice and righteousness became your top priorities?
How might those around you be impacted if your influence refreshed them like fresh rain?
🙏 Prayer:
Lord, give me a heart that leads like You—with justice, compassion, and humility.
Help me to surrender my influence and decisions to Your will.
May every step I take reflect Your ways, and may my leadership—whether big or small—point others toward Your glory.
Raise up in me the strength to serve well, to love deeply, and to lead with eternity in mind.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
