Day 92 When It Looks Like God is Silent A Reflection on Psalm 74
We don’t always see temples torn down like in ancient days—but we do witness spiritual devastation: Compromise in pulpits. Division in the Body. Preferences replacing purity. And like the psalmist, we cry out—not just in anger, but in longing: “Lord, remember Your covenant. Rise up. Defend Your name.”

When It Looks Like God Is Silent
By Torrie Slaughter
Psalm 74 is not a gentle whisper—it’s a cry.
A desperate plea from people who can’t make sense of what’s happening around them. The sanctuary is destroyed. The enemy is raging. And it feels like God is nowhere to be found.
“O God, why do You cast us off forever? Why does Your anger smoke against the sheep of Your pasture?”(Psalm 74:1, ESV)
These words carry the ache of abandonment—the heartbreak of wondering where God is when everything is falling apart.
And yet… this psalm gives us permission to pray honestly.
To approach God, not with polished words, but with raw trust.
Because when we feel forgotten, we honor God not by pretending—but by praying.
🔄 Desperation Meets Remembrance
The psalmist wrestles with divine silence—but also recalls divine power:
“Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.” (v. 12)
He remembers the God who divided the sea, who conquered chaos, who ruled over creation.
And in doing so, he reminds us—when God seems silent, it doesn’t mean He’s absent.
When you don’t see the evidence, it doesn’t mean He isn’t still working redemption behind the scenes.
God is still King. Still faithful. Still acting on behalf of His people.
💬 Modern Relevance: When Devastation Hits the Church
We don’t always see temples torn down like in ancient days—but we do witness spiritual devastation:
Compromise in pulpits. Division in the Body. Preferences replacing purity.
And like the psalmist, we cry out—not just in anger, but in longing:
“Lord, remember Your covenant. Rise up. Defend Your name.”
Even in our sorrow, we must hold on to this truth:
God is not overwhelmed by what overwhelms us.
He is still working salvation in the midst of the earth—and sometimes, even silence is a setup for glory.
💭 Reflection Questions:
Do you still believe God is working—even when you can’t see the outcome?
Are your prayers rooted in frustration, or in a trust that remembers His faithfulness?
🛐 Prayer:
Father,
When it feels like You’re silent, remind me of who You are.
Help me to remember what You’ve done before, so I can trust You now.
Restore my hope. Anchor my soul in Your covenant.
And teach me to honor You in the waiting—not just with words, but with unwavering faith.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
