When God Steps Back
by Torrie Slaughter
There are moments in life that feel… quiet.
Not peaceful quiet.
But unsettling quiet.
The kind where you wonder, “God, where are You?”
Psalm 78 takes a heavy turn in verse 60:
“He abandoned the tabernacle… the tent he had set up among humans.”
This wasn’t because God changed.
It was because the people consistently rejected Him.
They chose idols.
They ignored His voice.
They walked in disobedience long enough that His presence was no longer honored.
And eventually… God allowed them to feel the weight of that distance.
This is difficult—but necessary to understand.
Because sometimes what feels like God’s absence
is actually the result of prolonged misalignment.
Not punishment… but consequence.
Yet even here, this isn’t the end of the story.
God doesn’t withdraw to destroy—
He allows distance so we recognize what we’ve lost.
Jehovah Shalom is not just peace when everything feels good.
He is also the One who reveals when something is off—
so we can return before it’s too late.
Prayer
Lord, if there is anything in my life that is creating distance between us, reveal it to me. I don’t want to grow comfortable in disconnection. Draw me back into alignment with You. Restore what has been lost and lead me into Your peace again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
